Since 2002, pilgrims on the Hajj and Umrah as well as other travellers during the Hajj season must have the quadrivalent ACWY vaccination in order to enter Saudi Arabia. This mandatory visa requirement stems from epidemics of meningococcal disease linked to the Hajj pilgrimage. It guards against septicaemia and meningitis brought on by the four strains A, C, W, and Y. Additionally, vaccination is advised before travelling to sub-Saharan Africa and a few other nations, particularly if the traveller would be residing there, working there, or going there during an outbreak.
ACWY vaccination is advised for all pilgrims performing the Hajj or Umrah, regardless of age. Before entering Saudi Arabia, pilgrims on Hajj or Umrah who are 2 years of age or older must show a certificate of vaccination with ACWY. At least ten days must have passed from the certificate’s issuance before travel. Seasonal employees in Hajj regions are also covered by this.
